Details of the SEA Curriculum Approach

The SEA curriculum is comprised of seven types of classes, as described in the following table:

SEA Preparation  Classes

Reviews the mathematics and physics necessary for the curriculum.  It also includes  probability and statistics.

Analysis Classes

Presents courses on analysis, including strategic analysis, campaign analysis, tactical analysis, and systems analysis.  To our knowledge, this sequence of courses is unique to NPS and presents the officer with analytic tools for any level of combat.  Graduates will be able to analyze proposed or existing systems at every level to assess their contributions, to make trade-offs, and for insights into the best operational use of the systems.

Systems Technology Courses

Presents courses on the technologies currently used in Naval combat systems. We cover sensors, weapons, and C4I.  The engineering thread builds on the knowledge of these technologies.

Systems Engineering Courses

Provides the foundation for developing and designing new systems, from requirements determination to system implementation.  Later courses include suitability issues such as Human factors, Engineering Cost estimation, as well as assessment tools including Test and Evaluation, and risk.

Project or Seminars

Four course equivalents and five seminars.  During this thread, the SEA students are exposed to systems engineering in practice within DoD and commercially and then have the opportunity to apply all the previously mastered course material to the solution of a large systems engineering problem of key importance to the Navy.

JPME (required for USN)

Four courses offered by the Naval War College that satisfy level I of JPME.
