U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Elle Ekman presents a summary of her operations research thesis to a panel of judges during the Military Operations Research Society (MORS) Stephen A. Tisdale Graduate Research Award competition in Glasgow Hall, May 25.

“We are here to recognize some outstanding work from our students,” said NPS Senior Lecturer Capt. Brian Morgan.

The primary standard for the award is research that leads to demonstration of, or potential for, increased operating effectiveness and theses that offer immediate or near-term value to the U.S. or its allies.

“This award really means a lot to MORS and it really embodies what we’re all about ... research that will improve operational effectiveness and strong potential for long term impact,” said Norm Reitter, MORS President. “There are three big things that I want you to take away when you leave here, one is your professional network, two, continue your professional development, three, take advantage of the opportunities to present your work and get feedback on it.”

During the competition, 6 students from various ranges of branches of service and countries presented their theses to a panel of judges on a variety of subjects that would improve operational effectiveness. Pakistani Air Force’s Salman Aleem and German Army Maj. Manuel Loewer sharing top honors in this quarter’s competition.

The MORS/Tisdale award was named in honor of Lt. Cmdr. Stephen A. Tisdale, who was killed in a military aircraft accident on March 21, 1991, while serving with Patrol Squadron 50 off the coast of California.
