In Memoriam - Richard J. Hoffman

Richard J. Hoffman served as Executive Director, then as Director of the Center for Civil-Military Relations from 9 July 1996 to 25 March 2018.  Under Rich’s leadership, CCMR became a thought leader and core program provider of civil-military relations, democratic control of armed forces, and defense and security governance in response to changing global and national priorities.  Rich thoughtfully designed education and training programs for leaders all around the globe, and he cultivated a diverse and responsive faculty team that continues to lead CCMR today.

Rich’s leadership and management as Director (beginning in 2004) directly resulted in the execution of 6,500 education and training events with an estimated 213,000 participants involving personnel from 175 partner, friendly, and allied countries.  In addition, as a Senior Lecturer at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), Rich taught graduate students and advised thesis students, thereby making personal and lasting contributions to the intellectual development of future leaders.

During his 22-year tenure at CCMR, Rich grew and shaped the center into the agile security cooperation organization that it is today, providing exceptional leadership, service, and friendship to all.
