Application Instructions for Scholarship for Service

STEM and MONARCH Programs

Please follow the instructions listed below to apply for either the STEM or MONARCH Scholarship for Service (SFS) program. 

  1. Go to http://www.nps.edu/Academics/Admissions/ApplyOnline/ApplyNow.html
  2. Under Apply Online to NPS click the "To Apply Online, click here".
  3. Click on "New Applicant."
  4. Click on "U.S. Applicant."   Non-US citizens are NOT authorized to apply to the Scholarship for Service Program.
  5. Fill in the required information and create a password.
  6. Complete the next Five (5) steps to establish your Naval Postgraduate School application. 
  7. Step 1: Use the following information to fill in the slots:

a. Program Delivery Mode:                     Resident on Campus

b. Program Type:                                    Master's Degree

c. Resident-Masters  Degree Program:  Curric 368 - Computer Science

d. Academic Year/ Quarter:                     Select the corresponding start date. 
                                                               If not listed, select "Not Sure" and be sure to fill in the "Notes" section, below.

e. Academic Profile Code:                       Initial APC Calculation: Unsure

f. Notes:  

Indiciate the program and start date to which you are applying. 
Copy the "Start Date" from the Application Timeline appropriate for your program, and adjust the examples below: 
Example:

       Applying for the SFS-MONARCH program.
       Start date: Jan 2021 (2021/Q2)
       For further information, please contact the SFS Program Manager.

Example:

       Applying for the SFS-STEM program.
       Start date: Mar 2021 (2021/Q3)
       For further information, please contact the SFS Program Manager.

g. Click "Next"

  8. Step 2 - Application Information - Employment Category

a. Employment Type:               Non Gov't

b. Apply for Scholarship:          Yes, Select category (Monarch / STEM)

c. Agreement to Notify NPS:    Yes
    of change in Active Duty
    or Employment Status

d. Tuition:                                 Yes

e. Click "Next"

  9. Step 3 - 5: fill out accordingly.

10. Confirmation page

a. Print a copy for your records

11. Supplemental Application Materials (Required for SFS applications.)

  1. The following supplemental application materials need to be sent to the address below.
     All items must be received no later than the application deadline.

  1. Official sealed transcripts from ALL schools attended (undergrad/grad)

  2. Official GRE scores (either the General or Computer Science GRE is acceptable).  Please use Institutional Code 4831 to have your scores sent automatically to NPS.

  3. Two (2) Letters of Recommendation

  4. Resume

  5. Essay: In 1000 words or less, please discuss the following question. Only typewritten essays will be accepted.

"New information and communication technologies are developed and introduced into the marketplace at a rate that often exceeds the government's ability to fully understand how these new technologies can be used to threaten our nation's information infrastructure. What opportunities and/or challenges does this present to information assurance professionals?"

12. ADDITIONAL NOTES:

  1. Transcripts must come directory from the institution. Some institutions deliver transcripts electronically through secure means. If your institution subscribes to one of these programs, the email address for electronic transcripts is admissions@nps.edu.
  2. Recommendations can be sent to either the above mailing address, or scanned and sent as a PDF to the e-mail address admissions@nps.edu. In both cases, letters of recommendation should be sent directly by the recommender.
  3. If you have previously submitted materials or documents to the NPS Admissions Office, please contact us directly to verify the documents are on file before ordering a new set of documents.
  4. U.S. students with degrees from international institutions are required to have their degrees evaluated using a course-by-course evaluation using a service credentialed by the National Association for Credential Evaluation Services (NACES): http://naces.org. The evaluation should be sent to the mailing address, by the evaluation service directly (no electronic submission of transcript evaluations).
