Captain Craig Weston Turley
USN, Retired

Craig Turley, a native of Cheswick, Pennsylvania, was commissioned in 1977 upon graduation from the United States Naval Academy. His first assignment was as Main Propulsion Assistant and then Navigator in USS DOWNES (FF 1070). From 1980 through 1982, Captain Turley served at Service Schools Command, Great Lakes, Illinois, as Plant Manager for the Steam Training Facilities (600 and 1200 psi Hot Plants). After graduating from Surface Warfare Officer Department Head School in February 1983, he served as Chief Engineer in USS SIDES (FFG 14), followed by a tour as Materiel Officer in Destroyer Squadron Five.

From 1987 through 1989, Captain Turley attended the Naval Postgraduate School, where he earned a Master of Science degree in Operations Research. His next assignment was as Executive Officer in USS FORD (FFG 54), which deployed to the Arabian Gulf during Operation DESERT STORM. From May 1991 until June 1994, he served on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations in the Logistics Directorate (N4) as Joint and Operational Logistics Plans and Policy Branch Head and later Executive Assistant to OPNAV N4. He served as Commanding Officer in USS HARRY W HILL (DD 986) from January 1995 to October 1996. Captain Turley attended the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, from November 1996 to November 1997, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.

Captain Turley served on the CNO staff (N46) as Deputy Director, Shore and Installation Management until July 1999. He was then assigned to Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet as Assistant Chief of Staff for Manpower and Personnel until April 2000. He assumed command of Fleet Combat Training Center Pacific in May 2000. From June 2003 to June 2007, he served as the Commanding Officer of the San Diego NROTC Unit. He retired from active service in July 2007.

Captain Turley’s awards include the Legion of Merit (three awards), the Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), the Navy Commendation Medal (three awards), the Joint Achievement Award, the Combat Action Ribbon, and various service medals and unit awards.

Currently, Captain Turley is the Director of the NPS San Diego and Norfolk Learning Centers and Fleet Concentration Area (FCA) Engagement. He is primarily responsible for delivering of graduate education to Officers and GS employees through distance learning media and meeting the educational needs of Fleet and FCA customers.

Captain Turley’s wife, Lori is the Corrections Technical Director at the Naval Consolidated Brig Miramar. She is also a graduate of Naval Postgraduate School with a Master of Science degree in Operations Research. They have two children, Brian and Megan.
