Sub Commodore Talks Shop With USW Students
By Javier Chagoya
Commodore of Submarine Squadron Eleven, Capt. Gene Doyle, right, meets informally with submariners Lts. Tom Pilkerton, Jason Richesin and Tom Driscoll in Herrmann Hall's Rose Garden, Aug. 20. Doyle, who commands six Los Angeles-class fast attack nuclear submarines, met with students in the undersea warfare curriculum to provide a state of affairs and outlook for operations at the squadron level of command.
"I was invited by NPS Professor and Undersea Warfare Chair retired Rear Adm. Jerry Ellis to provide students with some insight into squadron level operations and to give my personal thoughts on commanding fast attacks," Doyle said. "I've been in the job since February 2014, and I wanted to impart to these students a context of where the undersea warfare environment is currently, and where it's headed."
Doyle is responsible for providing training, material and personnel readiness support to six fast attack nuclear submarines, one of several squadrons under Commander, Submarine Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet.
While on campus, he also praised the implementation of the non-standard watchstanding bill championed by NPS Associate Professor of Operations Research Dr. Nita Shattuck.
"This latest mandate by the Submarine Force to enact Shattuck's research-based watchbill will benefit our submarine crews as a way to get a better handle on a crew's circadian rhythms and watch rotation schedule," Doyle said.
