Physics Faculty, Alumnus Honored With Superior Civilian Service Award
By MC2 Michael Ehrlich
NPS President retired Vice Adm. Ronald A. Route, left, and Director of Undersea Warfare retired Rear Adm. Jerry Ellis, right, present the Superior Civilian Service Award to NPS Senior Lecturer of Physics Dr. Daphne Kapolka in Spanagel Hall, Dec. 3. Route and Ellis both shared their thoughts on Kapolka's numerous contributions to the university with the many students and faculty in attendance.
"Throughout her 12-year career at NPS, she has been a positive force across campus, serving as the academic associate for the undersea warfare curriculum, involving mentoring and nurturing students throughout their stay," said Route.
Kapolka's service to NPS has not been limited to her role as an academic associate, however, as she has concurrently served on the academic counsel as the Department of Physics and Undersea Warfare Academic Group's representative.
"I learned right away in the undersea warfare program that the continuity of the whole program relies upon a lady by the name of Daphne Kapolka," said Ellis. "The strength of this program has grown due in large part to Daphne and what she has done here at NPS."
Kapolka, an NPS master and doctoral graduate, was unaware of her award until she walked into the room and saw her husband Gerry in attendance. She was eager to thank all of her colleagues for the support she needed to accomplish so much.
"It is a wonderful honor to receive this award, particularly considering all the dedicated and talented professionals I work with," said Kapolka. "I know from personal experience what a huge difference an NPS education makes out in the fleet. Knowledge has always been a powerful motivation for my work and I'm very grateful to all those who played a part in this recognition and who have provided help and encouragement along the way."
