New SAPR Lead Point of Contact Supports NPS, FNMOC

By MC3 Brian H. Abel

NPS staff member Lt. Kelly Blake recently accepted the challenge of becoming the university's primary Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) Point of Contact. In addition to her responsibilities as the President's Aide, Blake will now act as the primary liaison between NPS and the region's Sexual Assault Response Coordinator (SARC), ensuring the command program is operating at a high level.

In addition, thanks to the signing of a recent Memorandum of Understanding between NPS and Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC), Blake will also serve is the same capacity for the Navy's premier weather forecasting center. It's a position she says she is ready for, thanks in part to the committed volunteers already serving as SAPR Victim Advocates.

"The real 'boots-on-the-ground' people are our SAPR Victim Advocates. They're the ones who actually take phone calls and work with victims," said Blake. "Really, I'm the liaison between the command and the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator (SARC) and I help make sure our operation here is working like it should."

Blake's goal as the SAPR POC is to continue to support victims of sexual assault and educate service members and their families on what is often an uncomfortable, but critical, subject.

"I'm fortunate to have inherited a very well maintained program from my predecessor, so much of the hard work has already been done for me," said Blake. "An ongoing challenge in this position is in keeping useful information available, and in making sure the required training we provide stays with people in a useful way."
