It's Tax Season!

By MC2 Brian H. Abel

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, located in the legal office at the Presidio of Monterey, is providing free tax-filing assistance to active duty service members, retirees, and their dependents.

"We offer free state and federal tax preparation including e-filing and most people get their refunds within seven to 10 days." said VITA tax center Officer-in-Charge Mathew Shelton.

To ensure all volunteers are qualified the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the California Franchise Tax Board provides training and certifies all volunteers to prepare taxes, saving service members an average of $170 on a typical tax return.

Most junior service members typically have simple tax returns.

"For E-4 and below we try to make filing as easy and convenient as possible," said Shelton. "E-4 and below with no dependents can drop off their W-2, and we'll prepare their return and call them when it's ready.

"I would invite everyone to use the most convenient, valuable and, free benefits you've earned with your service," added Shelton.

Last year, VITA centers helped thousands of service members and dependents save an estimated $884,000 in tax preparation fees and provided over 17 million dollars in expedited tax refunds.

Anyone who wishes to complete his or her taxes should call the Tax Center at 831-242-7365 to set up an appointment.
