Applied Mathematics Professor Honored With Menneken Junior Faculty Research Award

By MC2 Michael Ehrlich

NPS Department of Applied Mathematics Associate Professor Lucas Wilcox has been named winner of the 2016 Menneken Award for Highly Meritorious Research for a Junior NPS Faculty Member for his efforts in advanced algorithms for real-world applications. Wilcox says he is thankful for an environment on campus that supports young faculty member's need to research and publish.

"They foster and support a young faculty member's ability to focus on teaching and research," noted Wilcox. "You do some service to the department, but the focus is to help you get a good footing to progress here."

Wilcox arrived at NPS in 2012 after working in industry for a handful of years. While the transition was not a simple one, Wilcox says he has found several benefits to employment in an academic environment.

"The interaction with the students is wonderful … To get new viewpoints on topics and to help them get to new viewpoints as well," said Wilcox. "Teaching in general just helps you solidify your understanding of whatever it is you're teaching."

Wilcox expressed thanks to several members of his department, and says he hopes he can be as supportive to new faculty in his own future here at NPS.

"I would like to thank Carlos Borges for nominating me, and as chair when I first showed up. And Craig Rasmussen, as our current chair, for being so supportive of the young faculty to give us room to do research," said Wilcox. "I would also like to thank [Professors] Frank Geraldo and Wei Kang for working with me develop my research portfolio. And in general, I would thank the whole Applied Math department for providing a supportive nurturing environment for us to do research … I hope to continue the research and teaching paths I have started, and can hopefully support a younger class of faculty that are coming in."

Wilcox is joined by senior faculty Distinguished Professors Gerald Brown and Peter Denning as the latest recipients of the university's premier research award.

Sponsored by the NPS Foundation, the annual Menneken Awards were created to honor Carl E. Menneken, NPS' first Dean of Research. The awards, given in December each year, are intended specifically for the encouragement and benefit of younger faculty members who have exhibited outstanding research efforts in science or engineering, as well as more senior faculty in recognition of a career of highly meritorious research in science or engineering.
