Associate Professor Ryan Gingeras of the National Security Affairs Department has published two articles in Foreign Affairs recently. One provides historical perspective on a critical aspect of the struggle against ISIS, and the other examines the questions as to whether Turkey can assimilate is refugees.

In the first article, titled "Turkey Beyond Borders," Gingeras argues that to genuinely appreciate Ankara’s struggle to maintain and police its southern border with Syria, it is worth going back further than the current conflict with ISIS. The article reviews how a series of complex political and economic challenges have vexed Turkish politicians and provincial residents alike.

In the second article, titled "Can Turkey Assimilate Its Refugees?," Gingeras discusses the challenges associated with the influx of Syrian refugees in to Turkey since 2011.
