Navy Senior Leader Seminar (NSLS)

The Course

The Navy Senior Leader Seminar (NSLS) provides senior officers (O6/O5) and senior civilians (GS-15) with an intensive nine-day executive education program that introduces the latest "best practices" in strategic planning, goal setting, strategic communication, effects-based thinking, risk management, financial management, and innovation. The program provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to manage and lead effectively in complex organizations. Learning is enhanced by the use of case studies, small-team exercises, practical applications, seminar-style discussions, peer learning, and faculty presentations.

Objectives / Desired End State

  • To learn directly from Navy leaders the strategies, policies, and resource issues shaping the Navy's strategy today and the business processes to achieve that strategy.
  • To acquire knowledge that stimulates innovative thinking and provides leadership tools to meet the challenges confronting the U.S. Navy in the 21st Century.
  • To share expertise with and learn from peers in the course.
  • To enhance participants' individual strengths to support changes set by senior Navy leadership.

Program Manager

Captain Bob Huddleston, USN (Ret.)

Captain Bob Huddleston, USN (Ret.) operated in every theater of the world and was engaged in operational intelligence assignments at the Squadron, Air Wing, Carrier Strike Group, Fleet, Joint, NATO and National levels. His specialties included contingency targeting, mission planning and both satellite-based and aerial reconnaissance. He also led DoD efforts to establish the first Joint Targeting School and the first Joint Task Force dedicated to conducting inter-agency counter-narcotic operations. After retirement, Bob operated as an independent consultant to DOD, DHS, the Intelligence Community and industry for twelve years before joining CEE. Read full bio...

The Faculty

A diverse mix of leading academics and senior executives from both Navy and the private sector offer participants a range of perspectives through which course objectives are addressed. The NSLS provides participants with the opportunity to engage with Navy's leadership on issues ranging from the strategic to the granular. Private sector thought leaders and academic experts share their insights on established and emerging best practices on a wide range of business issues that are critical to the successful operation of Navy organizations.

The Location

The NSLS is conducted at the Center for Executive Education on the campus of the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Lodging is available on-base at the Navy Gateway Inns & Suites in historic Herrmann Hall.

Who Should Attend?

The NSLS is designed for Navy Captains, high-potential Commanders, GS-15 equivalent civilians, and Fleet/Force Command Master Chiefs. Participants are nominated by their TYCOMs and community leadership.
