Captain Mike Ward is a 1989 graduate of Auburn University, Alabama, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics. He received his commission through the Aviation Officer Candidate School program and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in December 1990. 

Captain Ward’s initial operational assignment was flying the A-6E Intruder with the “Sunday Punchers” of VA-75. While with the "Punchers" he completed a Mediterranean Sea deployment on board USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV 67) in support of PROVIDE PROMISE and UN peacekeeping operations in the former Yugoslavia. After completing EA-6B Prowler transition training, Captain Ward was assigned to the "Lancers" of VAQ-131 where he served as Safety, Admin, Tactics and Operations Officer. While with the “Lancers” he made three combat deployments to the Arabian Gulf on board USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64) in support of Operation SOUTHERN WATCH. The last deployment included participation in the initial air campaign of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. Captain Ward completed his command tour with the “Wizards” of VAQ-133, completing an expeditionary combat deployment to Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. 

Shore assignments include duty as a Strike Warfare Analyst for the Strike Projection Evaluation and Anti-Air Warfare Research Branch of the Office of Naval Intelligence; staff duty at Commander, Naval Air Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet at Norfolk, Virginia serving as the EA-6B/EA-18G Requirements Officer; and, assignment to the Office of the Secretary of Defense in Washington, D.C. as Military Special Assistant for Electronic Warfare Systems, Director, Operational Test & Evaluation. Captain Ward completed his major shore command tour as Commanding Officer, Naval Base Guam in June 2014. He was subsequently assigned to Commander, Naval Forces Europe/Naval Forces Africa staff in Naples, Italy as the Comptroller. 

Captain Ward has accumulated over 3,100 flight hours and 595 carrier arrested landings. He is a graduate of the Naval War College non-resident program, and earned his master’s degree while completing the Naval Postgraduate School Executive MBA program. His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (one individual with Combat “V” and twelve Strike/Flight awards), three Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals (one with Combat “V”) and numerous other unit and campaign awards.
