NPS Students, Staff Compete in Monterey’s Scottish Games

Lt. Patrick Stewart, a student in NPS’ mechanical engineering program, competes in Monterey’s annual Scottish Games and Celtic Festival, Aug. 5. Stewart, along with NPS national security affairs students Air Force Majs. Scott Gross and Tom Alford, and Naval Support Activity Police Officer Bryan Swanston, took advantage of the community’s longtime highland games festival for some classic, Celtic competition.
“I attended the Monterey Scottish Games & Celtic Festival last year to watch the events and enjoy the festival,” said Stewart. “From seeing the games, I was intrigued to try the following year.”
This was Stewart’s first attempt at competing in the Scottish Games, placing 13th overall amongst 17 class C participants. Stewart keeps pretty busy with extracurricular and community activities whenever possible, he says, serving as an assistant command fitness leader on campus, and as a tutor with the NPS Breakfast for Your Brain program.
“In getting to know a few of the other competitors, they show interest in joining the military, or show much they support the military," Stewart said. "A military presence in extracurricular activities like these demonstrates our shared interests."
