NPS Staff, Faculty Recognized for Lengthy Careers in Federal Service

By MC2 Michael Ehrlich

A handful of university staff and faculty were recognized during the latest NPS President's Council, Feb. 28, for their lengthy careers in federal service, collectively representing nearly 150 years of honored service.

Recognized during the meeting were, from left, NPS Staff Counsel Katherine Ashton (25 years), Associate Professor Nita Shattuck (20 years), Financial Management Analyst Lolita Mamuad (30 years), Professor Geoffrey Xie (20 years), and Research Professor Haflidi Jonsson (20 years). Also recognized was NPS Professor Wendell Nuss (30 years), not pictured.

"I felt very, very proud of myself when I was recognized with this award," said Mamuad. "My favorite experience at NPS is when a person greets you with a smile."

For a lengthy, and healthy, career from a faculty member's perspective, Shattuck offered this advice to her young colleagues.

"Care for your students from day one, and be open to learning from them," she said. "Don't be afraid to tackle problems that may seem insurmountable. Those are the ones that are worthy of your time and energy."
