NPS' HR Center of Excellence Welcomes Latest Intro Course Cohort

The Naval Postgraduate School’s (NPS) Human Resources Center of Excellence (HRCOE) welcomed the latest cohort for its introductory human resources (HR) course, July 31. The five-day program provides naval officers with a detailed overview of the Navy’s manpower, personnel, training and education policies, along with core HR practices in development, management, recruiting and requirements.
In total, 28 naval officers from both active duty and reserve components, ranging in rank from Ensign to Lieutenant Commander, are on campus this week for the biannual course.
“Over the course, we have 15 subject-matter experts in different areas of human resources, including the offices of Civilian Human Resource Management and Navy Analysis Manpower Center, come to give detailed lectures,” said Lt. Cmdr. Doug Jones, deputy director of HRCOE. “This is just one step in the HR continuation of learning, the majority of students we have come from different naval communities and we give them the skills, resources and technical knowledge needed to be a human resource officer in the Navy.”
The HRCOE was established in 2007 by the Chief of Naval personnel to serve as a focal point for lifelong learning in the HR community to further deliver expertise in defining, recruiting, developing, assigning and retaining a highly-skilled naval workforce.
The Introductory course is one of four courses offered by the HRCOE. Others include the Human Resources Intermediate Course, the Human Resources Advanced Course, and the Certification Preparation and Examination Program. These programs are in place to fulfill the HRCOE’s four-fold mission of developing and executing the learning continuum for all active duty and reserve HR officers, guiding the HR Executive Board and regional captains, maintaining an HR resource repository, and Mentor HR officers in the Monterey region.
