Founder of NPS' Center for Infrastructure Defense Honored With Hamming Interdisciplinary Award

By Javier Chagoya, Khaboshi Imbukwa and Jeanine Garcia

Dr. David Alderson, an Associate Professor in the NPS Department of Operations Research and founding director of the university's Center for Infrastructure Defense, has been named recipient of the 2017 Richard W. Hamming Annual Faculty Award for Interdisciplinary Achievement.

"Associate Professor Alderson and his research embody the core spirit of the Hamming Award … His interdisciplinary research provides a significant impact on DOD and government activities," said NPS Provost and Academic Dean, Dr. Steven R. Lerman.

During the past 10 years at NPS, Alderson has served as adviser or second reader for more than 50 master's students, including students from five different NPS curricula.

"His teaching and thesis advising are inherently interdisciplinary, with a consistent theme of applying a broad array of techniques to problems from a variety of application areas," added Lerman.

The award, named after NPS professor emeritus Dr. Richard W. Hamming, highlights one faculty member annually that demonstrates a commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship and exceptional teaching skills. Hamming's dedication to teaching and research are well known, specifically in the mathematics, computer science and telecommunications fields of study. Hamming taught at NPS as an adjunct Professor from 1976 to 1997.

Alderson will be recognized along with the Winter quarter's top award-winning graduates during the Quarterly Awards Ceremony, March 21 at 3:00 p.m. on the Quarterdeck.
