CALMED to Deliver Nearly 1,000 Vaccines During Three-Day Campaign on Campus
By Javier Chagoya
The California Medical Detachment (CALMED), located on the U.S. Army Garrison Presidio of Monterey, in coordination with NPS’ Naval Medical Administrative Unit (NMAU), delivers the Fluarix vaccine to NPS students in Ingersoll Auditorium, Nov. 1. Over a three-day period on campus, CALMED personnel will deliver nearly 1,000 vaccinations to military personnel.
CALMED Non-Commissioned Officer-in-Charge, Staff Sgt. Graham Sharp, says his team of ‘shooters’ and administrative staff are hoping to get as many service members documented as vaccinated in advance of the flu season. They efficiently worked through long lines of students in order to meet their goal, in spite of already working under a compressed timeline.
“We would have normally begun our vaccination program in early October, however, some of the vaccine stock was diverted to Puerto Rico by the Defense Logistics Agency as the need was greater in that region,” explained Sharp. “We’re on track now and fully prepared to deliver the vaccine.”
The Presidio’s CALMED detachment is made up of 120 staff, comprised of both military and civilian healthcare professionals and support staff. CALMED provides care to approximately 7,000 enrolled patients in support of six individual commands on the Monterey Peninsula.
